  • Web Trends Map 2009 – An Information Design Masterpiece

Following a re-tweet about a post discussing web typography, sorry I forget who initially tweeted this one, I was confronted with a piece of information design work which had me absolutely speechless. I’ve seen previous versions of the Web Trends Map, but this latest installment is a real work of art.

Information Design to make your mouth Water

This is a masterpiece of information design
This is a masterpiece of information design

The Web Trend Map is a yearly publication by Information Architects Inc. (iA). It maps the 333 leading Web domains and the 111 most influential Internet people onto the Tokyo Metro map.

I can’t wait for this to be finalized so I can get hold of a printed copy for my office.

    What the Map really means.

According to the creator’s of this map of juicy web goodness, countless hours of research was undertaken to assess to most effective, profitable and traffic generating websites and web gurus to put together a resource which is filled with the web’s most influential spaces and faces.

These web trends have been intelligently super-imposed over a map of the Tokyo Metro System, aligning those web venues which have similar characteristics to the actually Tokyo Metro spaces they virtually occupy. For example:

Google is placed in the busiest, most highly trafficked train station in the world: Shinjuku.

The width of an entities station represents it’s stability in the web space.

    Trend Lines/Genres

Metro lines were established to group similar web entities. Upon investigation you’ll quickly realise what a mammoth task of information architecture this must have been. Further more, characteristics like the height of specific stations on the Virtual Map, represent the web entities success in terms of both traffic & revenue, which explains of course why Google towers above the rest. The use of various coloured lines and the position of certain stations at intersections of 1, 2 or 3 lines expresses which trend lines specific web entities actually cross or overlap.

Just a quick glance across the Trend Map reveals a wealth of information and insight into the current shape of the web sphere. I can see this map being presented in thousands of boardrooms and strategic sessions world-wide. It’s got that buzz appeal which the Orielly Web 2.0 Tag Cloud held at the beginning of the entrance of Web 2.0 into the mainstream. The many so called “social media gurus” out there are gonna eat this one up for breakfast lunch & supper.

This is very much still a work of art and feedback is being taken currently to make it as accurate, error free and apt as it can possibly be.

I’ve spent only a few minutes glancing at this web wonder and have already foreseen endless hours of my future dissappear in the journey this one is about to open for me. I’ll stop myself from using the cliche’s of beautiful, stunning, elegant to describe this one, even though these and more over used adjectives definitely apply in this case.

  • My macbook HD has crashed, go backup yours now!

    The importance of backing up

Anyone seen the terrible flashing question mark of harddrive death before, well now I have.

A few months ago, my HP notebook’s motherboard burnt out and put me out of action for a few days. I managed to take the harddrive to get it backed up but Incredible connection’s service centre did an incomplete backup. So I ended up lossing loads of data and being in a bit of distress for a while being the digital nomad that I am.

    Technology can never be infallible

So I decided to make the switch back to mac hoping for a more stable and reliable setup. I hoped to use the time machine system to keep a regular backup of work btu my 500gig HD has already got loads of data on it so I couldn’t format it just yet until I could find a way to back up that data.

Yesterday, in nearing the end of my largest project to date and with 6 other projects running in the background, my macbook HD seems to have completely packed up. It started with a few freezes and then a flashing question mark. I tried most of the generic fixes provided online to no avail and I think I’m gonna have to kiss loads of data goodbye. Thanks the Lord for my online backups and test sites of my current projects I might only have to catch up on about 2 days of work in the short term, but all my juicy resources, wordpress code, plugins, themes, imagery, etc etc is a distant memory.

Be warned, your Data is at risk

So My warning to anyone out there who is listening, backup right now, yes right now, now is almost too late to backup.

    Mac Data recovery guru needed

To any mac gurus out there who might have a solution for me, the HD still seems to be making some buzz but is completely not detectable. I’ve even bought a casing and attached it to another mac but nothign detected, if anyone has any solution out there I will be eternally grateful and might even be able to offer something of value in return.

  • iPod nano, my favourite new toy / tool

I wrote about winning an iPod a little while ago, something I was ecstatic about at the time. I had no idea though just how much this little device would change my life so I feel I have to share the benefits of owning an iPod nano. I say iPod nano because I don’t have any experience with any other models of iPod.

I’ve become somewhat of a podcast addict of late. Not having spent a single cent at the iTunes store as I’m not much of a music lover, I quickly found that there are tons of freely available podcasts available through the iTunes store. A few of my recent favourites are “Grammar Girl“(all about using the English language correctly), Design Guy(podcast about being a good designer), TED talks(inspirational talks by the best minds in the world), Freelance Radio(from freelance switch) & The Common Craft Show(simplifying web 2.0 concepts). There’s a wealth of knowledge out there waiting to be accessed. I did a quick search through iTunes and found a stack of design related podcasts ready to inform and inspire.

Once you get hooked by the podcast bug you’ll realize there are really talented, entertaining speakers all over the world sharing their ideas and experiences. Many Universities have also provided material on subjects they cover either in an official capacity or through the students recording lectures or classes.
